Pacer Support Guide · Part 28 of 33

Water Stations and Toilet Breaks

Don’t stop at water stations, help struggling runners with their drinks, and know the etiquette for an emergency toilet stop.

  • Don’t stop at water stations: aim NOT to stop. Grab your drinks while running. If it is crowded, one pacer collects drinks for all while the leader maintains the pace.
  • Help struggling runners: see a runner struggling? Offer to grab their drink or even carry it for a while (gentleman-pacer style!). A drink can also be put in your backpack.
  • Hydration guidance: first-timers may forget to drink. Remind your runners to drink at least a little at every water station, even if they are not thirsty, and share your experience of staying hydrated.
  • Nature calls – absolutely necessary? If you really must go to the toilet, inform your fellow pacers. They keep running while you set a new world record for a toilet stop, and you then rejoin the team as soon as possible. Remember: do NOT stop your watch, and make 100% sure Auto Pause is off.
