On Course: Runner Safety, Gun Time and Music

Runner safety always comes first. Plus: why you start your watch at the gun, not the mat — and the etiquette of running with music.

Priority one: runner safety#

  • If any runner in your group shows signs of injury or distress, immediately alert the nearest race official, volunteer or medical professional. Do not hesitate – their health is paramount and swift action is essential.
  • If a member of your pacing team can safely offer initial support while waiting for help, please do so. The runner’s well-being is your top priority; in a life-threatening situation, providing support is more important than continuing to pace.

Start time = gun time#

  • Start your watch at the gun. When the start signal is given, all pacers press the start button immediately.
  • Do NOT wait until you cross the timing mat.

Music#

  • Pacers may bring music on the run.
  • Make sure the music is pleasant for your runners.
  • Respect residential areas – no full rock concerts there!
