Race-Day Logistics: Timings, Gathering and the Start Line
From the operational rundown and punctuality to collecting your flag and lining up in front of the right pen — everything before the gun goes off.
Operational timings (rundown)#
The race-day operational rundown for your event shows exactly what happens and when. The figure below shows the typical sequence; see the example race-day rundown for a complete one.

Absence#
If for any reason (e.g. illness) you cannot take part in the race, inform the team as soon as possible. There is nothing more frustrating than a pacer who simply does not show up.
Be on time#
It is an absolute must that all pacers arrive on time. In previous years we had to phone some pacers at the last minute, leaving their teammates and the organisers wondering whether they would come at all.
Strategy plans#
Each pacer group receives a race-day plan showing the suggested pace per segment, the bridges and other important information.
Gathering location#
On race day, all pacers meet at the designated Pacer Assembly Point or Race Kit Pick-Up (RKPU) area (see the event rundown for the exact location). Here pacers receive their backpacks and flags and, if not collected earlier, their bib. Arrive on time: you need to make sure your backpack fits well before the start.
Race start location#
- Each pacer’s pen number is printed on their bib.
- Pacers must start at the front of their own pen. Do NOT move to another pen.
- If you are in Pen 1, do not stand at the very front of the start line; always stay BEHIND the elite runners.
- Your event rundown shows the exact pen layout and location; the diagram below illustrates the general principle.
