Encouraging Runners and the Last Kilometres Strategy

Lift spirits, not just pace — and know when (and when not) to encourage a faster finish in the closing kilometres.

Encourage runners on the way#

  • Lift spirits, not just pace: you are more than a metronome. Motivate tired runners you meet on the course to follow you. A friendly word, a smile or a confident nod can be the spark they need to keep going.
  • Spread the cheer: your encouragement is not limited to your own group. Cheer for those you pass and those who follow – your enthusiasm is contagious.

Last few kilometres strategy#

During the last few kilometres you can encourage runners to speed up towards the finish and leave you behind.

  • Team finish: if everyone in your group still feels strong, you can suggest a collective final push and finish slightly faster than planned. But remember: your team comes first. If even one runner needs to stay on pace, all pacers stick to the pace and provide unwavering support.
  • Personal glory: runners with energy left in the tank can be encouraged to fly towards the finish and leave you behind.
  • When is it acceptable to speed up? Half marathon: in the last 2 km. Full marathon: only once you have cleared the course’s last major bridge or climb.

The key is to be responsive and supportive. Every runner is on their own journey, and your job is to guide them to a satisfying finish.
