Who Can Be a Pacer? Understanding the Pacing Buffer

Being fast isn’t enough. Pacers must be able to run meaningfully faster than their group’s target pace — here is how big that buffer should be.

While speed is important, simply being a fast runner does not automatically make someone a good pacer. Effective pacer recruitment should extend beyond selecting skilled runners who can complete their own race on time.

The pacing buffer#

Pacers must be able to run the assigned distance meaningfully faster than the group’s target pace. This buffer ensures they can hold the required pace comfortably and confidently, even when faced with unexpected challenges on race day.

As a general guideline, the required buffer scales with how relaxed or ambitious the group’s target pace is, rather than with the race distance alone:

  • Faster, more ambitious pace groups (e.g. a 1:45 half marathon or 3:45 full marathon) typically require a buffer of around 8%, since these groups already attract stronger, more experienced pacers.
  • Slower, more relaxed pace groups (e.g. a 2:30 half marathon or 5:00 full marathon) typically require a larger buffer of around 13%, as these paces leave recreational-level pacers less natural margin to absorb an unexpectedly hard day.
