Pacer Support Guide · Part 5 of 33

Beyond Speed: Social Skills, Ethics and Commitment

Great pacers love motivating others, are honest about their readiness, and act as ambassadors for their event.

A strong pacing buffer is essential, but it doesn’t make someone a good pacer on its own. Besides the pacing buffer, consider:

Social skills#

Pacers should have a genuine passion for motivating others and sharing their experience in a positive, approachable manner. These skills should come naturally.

Ethics#

Pacers must be honest and transparent. If at any point – during preparation, before the race or during the run – a pacer feels unprepared for the role, they must inform their peers and the organising team promptly.

Pacer commitment#

Pacers are ambassadors of the event and its organising team. Refrain from public criticism of organisers, sponsors or fellow pacers, including on social media.
