Pacer Support Guide · Part 2 of 33

Our Pacing Philosophy

Hitting the finish time matters — but an effective pacing philosophy goes beyond the clock to create a positive, supportive race experience.

While many race organisations treat specific finish times as the main goal, an effective pacing philosophy extends beyond the clock. On race day, the goal is to create a positive and supportive race experience that empowers runners to reach their individual goals.

Seven things we emphasise#

To achieve this, we emphasise the following:

  • Pre-race preparation: arriving on time, answering questions and providing guidance as needed.
  • Technical guidance: providing pre-race advice on watch settings and pacing techniques.
  • Gradual pacing: a controlled and steady build-up of pace throughout the race.
  • Strategic adjustments: adapting to terrain challenges such as bridges and slopes.
  • Motivational support: encouraging and supporting fellow runners.
  • Attentive care: ensuring the safety and well-being of all runners, including at hydration stations.
  • Contingency planning: knowing what to do when a pacer is unable to complete the race.

The outcome we aim for#

By focusing on these elements, we aim to create a race experience that leaves runners feeling empowered, supported and proud of their personal achievements.
